As a gesture of appreciation and as acknowledgement of Nelson Mandela’s fight for freedom in the struggle, Cabinet has endorsed the 18th of July NELSON MANDELA DAY. This is a day in which we are encouraged to embrace the values of this humble leader and do our bit towards building our own communities.

During this time, we are spurred-on to do whatever is in our capability, to give back- even in the smallest ways, mostly in time- to any needing organizations and persons. The Mbuyelo family packed themselves snuggly into a couple of vehicles and made their way to a nearby community to spend their 67 minutes at a daycare centre in Thokoza, Johannesburg. Lethabong Creche was well-appreciative of the surprise visit which even brought with it many treats. This time, Mbuyelo was not alone in their venture, Standard Bank (Ltd) was happy to share this venture with us and all left with smiles even bigger than the kids!

Whether it is deliberate or a coincidence, it jumped out as an interesting discovery that the word ‘shepherd’ was used sixty-seven (67) times in the Bible and according to Baronius, the Virgin Mary died at the age of 67 (-although it remains disputable and is currently viewed an estimate)! Many good symbolisms come from these two numbers and it seems fitting then that we would all give back nobly- in heart and effort, to honour this day and this man who has ‘shepherded’ many from hate and harm, to a more liberated and united South Africa!

Well what do you know then? Mbuyelo’s value system is not far from this philosophy
